Learn moreFrom brain scans to psychoanalysis, emotions have been probed and prodded in an effort to make sense of them from both the biological and psychological perspectives.
But what's really going on when it comes to emotions?
In order to answer that question, it's important to take a look at emotions from the one perspective that hasn't been explored enough: the energetic perspective.
From an energetic point of view, your emotions let you know the following two things:
1. How much energy you're summoning at the moment is relative to what you desire at the moment
High-energy emotions such as passion or enthusiasm indicate that high-levels of focused energy are being summoned at the moment. The same is true for high-energy emotions that don’t feel as good, such as rage or jealousy.
On the other hand, low-energy feelings of lethargy or boredom indicate that there is very little focused energy being summoned at the moment.
2. What you think about any particular subject is aligned with what you want or what you don't want
When you really, really want something and you're thinking about it and feel pleasure from the thought, this means that what you're thinking about matches what you desire.
Whereas, if you really, really want something and you're feeling anger or disappointment at not having it, this means you are focusing upon the opposite of your desire. In doing so, you are not aligned with what you want. In fact, you are aligned with not getting what you want.
Making sense of your emotions
How many times has this happened to you? You’re all revved up and ready to go, jazzed about implementing a great business idea you’ve been thinking about, only to find yourself dragging your heels for some unknown reason.
What happened? Once you were bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with excitement, emotions running high. Now, you’re riddled with doubt and feeling confused and irritable. “Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea,” you begin. “I guess this just wasn’t meant to be,” you conclude.
Hold on a minute!
Instead of discarding your great idea as "wasn't meant to be," consider what your emotions are telling you from an energetic perspective. You owe it to yourself to discover the answers to two questions before you throw in the towel.
First, ask yourself: What are my emotions telling me about the amount of energy I'm summoning at the moment relative to implementing my great business idea?
When your emotions are strong—whether they feel good or bad to you—your desire is strong, and you are summoning a high-level of focused energy. When your emotions are weak, your desire is weak, and low-levels of energy are being summoned.
If you were once very happily excited about your great idea and now the balance of your emotions on the subject have shifted to feeling troubled and distressed, what information are your emotions feeding back to you?
From an energetic perspective, your emotions are telling you that high levels of focused energy are still being summoned, just not in a positive direction. But just because you're no longer feeling positively excited about your idea doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t do it.
Exercise: Before you throw in the towel, experiment with redirecting the balance of your thoughts about implementing your great business idea from negative, high-energy ones to positive, high-energy ones that feel good to you. Then, from this positive, high-energy perspective, decide if implementing your idea is right for your business or not. (If you make the decision from a negative, high-energy perspective, you may be sorry you did.)
Next, ask yourself: Is the majority of what I'm thinking about my great business idea aligned with what I want to implement or aligned with what I don't want to implement?
When emotions feel good—whether they are strong or weak—you are aligned with the fulfillment of what you do want. When emotions feel bad, you are aligned with the fulfillment of what you don't want.
So, if you're feeling bad, does this mean it wasn't meant to be?
From an energetic perspective, your emotions are absolute indicators of your vibrational alignment. They give you wonderful feedback as to your current point of alignment. They let you know in the moment whether you are aligned with what you want or aligned with what you don't want.
Exercise: Before you give up on implementing your great business idea, experiment with focusing your thoughts exclusively on what you want. When thoughts about what you don't want creep back in (and they will) just redirect them to what it is you do want. Then, from this point of alignment, decide if implementing your great business idea is still what you want for your business.
As an entrepreneur, knowing what your emotions are telling you from an energetic perspective is key to your decision-making success. By asking yourself the above two questions, you'll learn how to observe the emotional current running through you at the moment and know how to correctly decipher its meaning. This puts you, not your emotions, in control of your actions.
