Bedford Wine Merchants opened in 1994, is at the epicenter, with one of the largest selections of the most sought-after wines from the great wine growing regions of the world.
It continues the commitment started when Arthur Wunderlich first opened the Village Wine & Spirit Shop in Greenwich Village, New York in the mid 1970s. At that time New York wine enthusiasts were mainly interest in imported, particularly French, wines. Excited about the developing wine industry in California, Arthur felt it was just a matter of time before California and eventually other American wines would become as popular in New York as Bordeaux or Burgundy were.
He set about assembling the finest California wine portfolio in the East, introducing such fine labels as Duckhorn, Chateau Montelena, Chateau St. Jean, Diamond Creek, Matanzas Creek, Caymus, among others to New Yorkers. Later, before they became household names, Dunn, La Jota, Peter Michael, Etude, and Turley, along with exciting new wines from Oregon, Washington State and New York were first featured at the shop.
