Hufft Projects architecture firm unofficially began in 2001 with its first project, The Line House, in Springfield, Missouri. The clients were Robert and Diane Hufft, the parents of Matthew Hufft. Matthew designed the house with his parents over the course of 36 months and entirely during moonlight hours while he was working full time in New York or at graduate school earning his Master’s Degree from Columbia University. Shortly after the completion of The Line House, Hufft Projects began to receive commissions from friends and acquaintances for modern renovations and new construction. These projects allowed Matthew to venture out independently and marked the day of the official birth of Hufft Projects – February 14th, 2005.

In June of 2006, Matthew and his wife, Jesse, returned from New York City to their Midwestern roots in order to pursue and help satiate the growing desire for architecture which honors a modern aesthetic and sustainability. It is also at this time that the firm hired its first staff member. Hufft Projects operated out of Matthew and Jesse’s home, and by the end of 2006 had grown to 4 full time staff members. About this time, Architectural Record magazine recognized Hufft Projects as an emerging firm to watch out for. In March of 2007, Hufft Projects took on the adaptive reuse of a former horse stable in the heart of Westport as their new office and shop. With each finished project came recognition from local and national press. In addition, the newly completed work spurred greater interest in the firm which translated into new projects, mainly located in the Midwest. In November of 2009, Metropolitan Home magazine featured Hufft Projects as one of America’s most talented up and coming designers. Since its creation, Hufft Projects boasts 30 commercial and 34 residential projects. The company has grown to 8 full time members, including 5 architects, 1 industrial designer, and 2 office managers/marketing personnel.

Hufft Projects believes that versatility can lend to a cohesive design experience. In February of 2008, Matthew created a brother company of Hufft Projects, MAKE Studios, to help facilitate custom fabrication for all project types, thus offering a more complete design package for clients. This also allows Hufft Projects to design more efficiently with access to such hands on knowledge of the built reality, in turn, overcoming major design challenges and setting itself apart from the competition.
