WFS is a part of a small shopping complex of stores owned by Scott's family since 1923. In order for my father-in-law to retire, two of the "departments" in the store were annexed off and sold as separate entitles in mid-2007.
Our challenge has been to develop a thriving business from a department that has had nothing cosmetic done to it since the 60's and primarily sold office products. We are faced with the anger of our formerly large customer base because no one from the main store communicated with them about the change to their beloved store. Coupled with the downturn in the economy, this has proved a daunting task.
We are striving to overcome both the economy and customer sentiment by communication, social networking and excellent customer service. We are changing the product mix to ecologically friendly, made in the US gift & stationery items. We are also UPS/FedEx shippers, provide office services such as faxing, copying and personal mail boxes.

We've also modeled our 3 year old business on the tenets of community involvement and the growing local movement. We've yet to realize an ROI, because retail…

Are you using Twitter effectively? Do you care?

    LORI WEBSTER

I, too, believe that Twitter needs to be refined, but think that it offers small businesses extra visibility to their customers or potential customers that is invaluable. Use of Twitter doesn't net results right away, but it does make users aware of your brand, particularly if what you tweet about…
