“Keep your friends close, and your franchisees closer.” Small Business RulesTM talks to Todd Parent, who learned the ins-and-outs of his business before he started his company, even though it meant starting at the bottom of the restaurant eco-system. When Todd decided he wanted to open a restaurant, he didn’t have any experience. So he logged several years as a waiter, bartender, and manager before finally opening Extreme Pizza in 1994. Combining offbeat toppings with an extreme sports theme, the restaurant was an immediate hit.

It is amazing that a new pizza chain can succeed in a market that is already saturated. Kudos to Todd Parent. Your diligence and hard work paid off!

As a financier of new businesses, there are two important predictors of success I typically monitor. I look for business whose owners work in the business on a full-time daily basis (absentee ownership rarely works.) Also, the business also must have access to enough working capital to sustain the business during lean times and unexpected events.
