we've got to use both. for example, we've got multiple twitter accounts for the various brands we manage: http://www.twitter.com/animaxent and http://www.twitter.com/popzillamtv

I'm a huge believer of online social networking (obviously, my company is all about that), however, I attend as many offline (onsite) networking opportunities as I physically can. I believe in offline networking because I think that face to face interaction can never be fully replaced by online social networking alone.

I agree totally Marcelo. I think it's a very real phenomenon that online activity (even enthusiastic activism) doesn't necessarily translate into real world results. There is a real disconnect. In principle, real life connections can be enhanced by online networking significantly. But real benefits from online connections are more sporadic and need a lot more cultivation.

I definitely try and find a balance between online and offline networking. Online is excellent for really getting brand recognition in your industry but it really helps to get out there and network face-to-face too. There's a great group of local Internet Professionals in my area that get together twice per month to network, discuss and learn from each other which is another great way to extend my network.

Physical world interaction can never really be replaced by online interaction - they are both very different experiences and reach different people. This is why I think that online social networking should be seen as an augmentation to real-world networking rather than a replacement for it.

What do you think?
