One of the largest companies in the world, IBM, has made many of their workers "remote workers" -- that is, they work from home. If IBM can do it, small businesses can. The technology is certainly there, and there are additional benefits to quality of life and the environment that come from staying off the freeway every day. When necessary, meetings can be held anywhere from a coffee shop to a rented conference room.
