Working on submitting our product to Lowes. They are requesting an SWOT analysis. Are their companies out there that perform the task? What is SWOT?

SWOT is an acronym for a strategic planning method used to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats particular to a project or a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Of course, armed with that information, then you'd develop containment and remediation contingencies for the Weaknesses and Threats, and optimization strategies for the Strengths and Opportunities. Yes, there are companies out there that provide the services (such as our company), as well as senior executive consultants and coaches (such as me).

SWOT: (internal) Strengths, Weaknesses and (external) Opportunities and Threats. A SWOT is generally complied as part of a business or even a marketing plan although, it is an acceptable practice to update annually or prior to a major change, product launch, etc.

David: Another consideration when preparing to submit products to any big-box retailer are the "soft costs" or program costs. If you haven't sold in this arena, it is easy to be blindsided by things like slotting allowances, product buy-backs, golf outing sponsorships, defective product return policies to name a few. And often their buying decision depends more on your program (rebates and bonuses) than your product and price. Let the seller beware! Do your homework and avoid presenting a product with price that you're unable to live with when all of the facts are known.

What do you think?
