TheLadders.com is a high-end job board for those seeking $100K + salaries and their founder & CEO Marc Cenedella is an expert in the job search field. He says that to make a great hire, you have to start very basic and understand what the duties and responsibilities of the job are. "One of the difficulties with interviews is... sometimes we slip into small talk or conversations about hobbies," says Cenedella. He explains to Business Insider CEO Henry Blodget that you have to focus these job interviews on how well they can do the job and if they will be happy with the job. It also shouldn't come as a surprise that a prospective hire's listed references may be "coached" or biased. So, if you want more honest feedback, you need to figure out a way to speak to former colleagues not on the interviewee's list.

Well done video. Professionally produced, great content, and not showy. Good use of video on the web.

As Mark mentions, all too many business owners lack interviewing skills. And with inherent biases, interview is minimally effective, at best in understanding if the person is a fit for the job.And in all too many cases, the background check process is abbreviated in an effort to get the new hire on board. While improving your interviewing and background checking will help you make better decisions, these provide you with about 66% of the insight possible. This is because we typically hire on the basis of skills and knowledge then fire and promote based on attitudes and habits. What if we had more insight into candidates attitudes and habits? If you have a key hiring decision and need to get it right the first time, that other 33% of available insight is gained by a job benchmarking process and subsequent candidate talent assessments. This allows you to capture the "DNA of the job" and then the performance DNA of the top candidates. For more: there's http://ExecutiveTalentAssessments.com While the system is not fool proof and does NOT replace interviewing or background checks, it does provide 33% more insight for critical hiring decisions.
