Learn moreWho hasn't dreamed of having their small business ranked #1 on Google for keywords that people are searching for? If you fit the profile of a Google dreamer who has perhaps sought the top spot with a variety of tactics, this post is about challenging you to dig a bit deeper into your search marketing strategy. To start, you need to rethink your goal... because being #1 on Google doesn't matter. Actually, it doesn't matter as much as you think. Why? Because the vast majority of people don't go past the first page of search results, but they do go past the first search result. The question not enough people are asking (and your competitors usually won't be asking either) is how can you own number 2-10?
When you start to focus on owning nine different search engine results spots, your thought process starts to shift. It's no longer about a single highly indexed and keyword laden page. Having a great URL or submitting your homepage to all the search engines won't make a difference. To really optimize your search engine strategy, you need to think differently about your search marketing and what will really make an impact. Here are five tips for how to get great search results in unexpected ways:
Excellent post would have to agree 100% PLUS add Brents page 1 model and you will excel! This is when you really get to test and tune http://www.chilliwackwebdesign.com
I was just checking the links from meninkilts.com and voila, I ended up here. I was curious to see where their external links were coming from since Brent and his crew seem to be doing something right. We just launched Klear Out at http://www.klearout.com which provides junk removal and handyman services. We'll definitely take these tips and test them out.
Hmm...this is the approach that drives me crazy. If a company has multiple sites, and every time I link on one I go back to the same place (which may not be what I need) I only lose respect for that company. This may be a good way to drive up search, but it is a terrible way to create a positive digital footprint. The same goes for multiple social media accounts. This is a shortcut that could backfire because you're messing with our search results and just putting more clutter into them. Bump up search with good content and a long term strategy...like his timebomb idea. Not with smoke and mirrors. You'll look bad.
Great article. Thanks for providing such a great resource. I almost never view the second or third pages on a google search but I do go up and down the first page. Time bomb posting... nice. Thanks again
very interesting article I am quite green when it comes to all this sort of thing & I am in the process of having a website built as we talk - so 'on the button' so to speak, for me. We have just advertised on the grounds of the google rating of the provider - but at the mo its early days
I could not agree more. We have invested heavily on getting our main site @meninkilts http://www.meninkilts.com to be on Google's 1st page. The moment we arrive on page 1 (not spot #1) conversion clicks through and business increases. Just get to the first page and build your site around user friendly content.
Interesting I never talked to client about getting #1 on goggle but to take over whole first page. It is so much fun when you help clients dominate the first page, makes great impression on clients as well.Haven't thought about calling it nesting, great label. I use monopoly game analogy and we are aquiring all the land , house and hotels we can-shazam. Its nice now that folks are seeing results from being on social media sites and the power of connecting like a tight net. Your blog is awesome and I enjoy your writing style, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
RohitI think for a while it was engrained in people that the HAD to have the ultimate, a #1 ranking with Google. Anything else was not worth it. Well we know that 2,3,4 ... do get clicked on and many times these are the folks using the phrases and not the single keywords. So few searches are a single word that as companies realize this and start to really look at the terms that are used to find them and make the necessary changes, they may only be able to rank 4-10; which is not too shabby.@SuzanneVara
Great post, i have been work SEO tecniques in our main site @ http://www.clickconhecimento.com.br and the results are very good. We are already in the top 10 at Google.
Excellent article...I especially like the Time Bomb Content. Thanks!

I have many number one positions on Google as do my clients. I would have to disagree that #1 gets less clicks. From my experience the top 3 seem to get pretty similar click through rates. But since Googles Panda update and the way they now display anywhere from 2 to 5 results from the same site, its more important than ever to be #1 or you could easily get pushed off page one, with only a small change in rankings.I think what has a stronger effect on who gets more clicks (In the top 5) are the titles and descriptions and how well they connect with the searchers needs,Scott Kavanaghhttp://www.bcseo.com
