As we move into 2011 the trend is all about connecting online and this is where you can use social media. If you have a business presence on Facebook for example you can now configure Facebook as your primary or secondary web site and sell your products or solutions directly from Facebook. What you really want to do is become more inteactive and provide information that is useful to your customers and prospect. If you're a retailer you can educate them about your products or services, (don't sell them), and if you have great content it will get shared, which promote your business. Twitter on the other hand has a very short life span (ie 5 minutes) so when you Tweet you may have to repeat it a few times to get your messages read or you can use it to promote specials. For example if you respond to this tweet in the next XX minutes you can get a discount of X % or you can provide information tweets as well. Linking all the sites to your web page also increases your rankings.

Thanks for your input Tim. Those are very helpful tips. We're are also finding that blog entries that inform about our area of expertise are a great way to increase traffic and improve SEO in general. It's fun to share case studies and client success stories. Thanks again for responding.

I don't. I use social media to **sell** to prospects and clients. Here's how I do it. I follow Burger King's formula http://vimeo.com/13734605

Facebook is a risky platform to be on if you are a business. The rules regarding businesses are quite strict and Facebook has been known to delete accounts on a semi regular basis. While this should not deter you from engaging people via FB, it should prompt you to take a look at the guidelines.

What would happen to your business if you found out you had been banned from Facebook?

I think social media is best used when it is used to drive light, simple engagements with fans or followers. Posting good content and creating value for users is the most important part. If it leads to sales; great, if not, make sure you are creating a brand for yourself.

if you have done your research, and you've identified why you need social media strategy, its time to clearly define your objectives. Your objectives should fall into one of these categories, competitive differentiation, market strength growth, your brand expansion. there are many ways to achieve each of these objectives

What do you think?
