When you just started a business, how do you network offline? Hot Potato CEO Justin Shaffer thinks first and foremost you need to focus on your product. It's also very beneficial to speak to the experts in your field to receive feedback and to begin the marketing process via word of mouth. While person-to-person networking is important, the Internet is also critical in kickstarting a business. Shaffer tells Business Insider Deputy Editor Dan Frommer that the Internet is a great place to ask questions and find solutions. "It's usually a pretty good place to start," says Shaffer. "If you want to say – How did somebody else solve this? – and if there's no answer there then you can just ask the question yourself."

Social networking sites like Linkedin are great places to find groups of people who have similar interests and/or who you are targeting to develop new business.

I've used it to build my network and build an "unassociation" called Silicon Halton which is geared to hitech professionals and entrepreneurs.
