There's obviously a lot of potential for generating sales by employing targeted tactics through social media, but be careful of get rich quick types of schemes for these new platforms.
Hard sells usually won't work in social media and will turn off potential customers in a heartbeat. The best way to leverage this new space is by building community. Get to know your audience, build relationships and the sales will begin to roll in. But push it too quickly and people will tune you out.
One book I've found very useful in terms of building community is "18 Rules of Community Engagement: A Guide for Building Relationships and Connecting With Customers Online" by Angela Connor. I suggest reading this first before going in for the hard sell.
