I would like to add one other thought: choosing an intranet package was a harder thing than I imagined. All the marketing materials tend to sound the same, when they list features. However, some offerings are better suited to certain types of businesses than others.
For instance, some offerings are geared more toward managing projects (such as Basecamp) and are better suited to businesses that juggle a large number of discrete projects at any given time (Web designers, graphic designers, etc.). For our business, a project-oriented solution is like fitting a square peg into a round hole because we do not have that many big projects.
You only discover the nuanced differences in the offerings when you try them out.
So the process of deciding on an intranet/virtual collaboration space took us a number of weeks, with my team and me trying out several different offerings. Google Apps is far from perfect, but it had the best combination of features for our requirements.
