Government contract bidding

From time to time I receive information through the mail recommending I make our products available to the government. Though this is not a venue most of my industry colleagues in the wine industry pursue, I'm wondering if it would be worth the effort to do so. Have any of you gone through this process and if you have is it a valuable part of your business?

I am very interested in government contracting, as I own a small translation business. You caught my attention with this phrase "Though this is not a venue most of my industry colleagues in the wine industry pursue...". Actually, I'm rather surprised that they don't, given the amount of parties, gatherings, seminars, meetings, conventions, etc, that are conducted at the governmental level.

If those parties take place in D.C. then it is a bit easier to direct my efforts through the normal distribution channels we work in. However, when you look at the military PX stores that would be where you could have some long term pull. Again I don't know the process well enough to determine if the effort is worth it or not.

What do you think?
