I see this as being a good start. Reform is not a destination but a journey we will always be adjusting and this bill if passed will begin to address many of the larger issues we are struggling with today. It does not have everything we need but it has everything we need right now.
The exchages provide choice, same plans Congress gets and increase competition.
The mandated coverage spreads the risk and provides incentive to control premiums.
The government subsidies based on income provide help for people to get coverage if their company doesnt offer it or they are self employed.
The attention to reduce Medicare fraud and waste and reduce Medicare Advantage rates to what they should be will shore up Medicare without cutting any services and keep it sound for 20 years.
Both Hospitals and Drug companies have pledged 100 Billion to the program. Hospitals because this will help address them getting stuck with the uninsured not paying and Rx companies dont mind paying into the system if it keeps Canada out of the market.
This could move us over time away from employers needing to provide insurance and allow them to focus on their business not insurance. Isnt that a good thing.
