Processing International Credit Cards

Usually I would process International orders via Paypal invoicing. Recently I tried using my normal card processor, FDMS, and 3 international orders got declined. I called FDMS support and 2 were declined due to insufficent funds, according to the person I called at FDMS. However these two both came up with AVS errors relating to address verification as well.

I contacted the customers, who replied saying they have the available funds and their bank has posted the money in "reserve" and lowered the available credit.

Anyone have any ideas what might be going on?

For the time being I am using Paypal Checkout for international orders.

I'm thinking of just having these customers re-place the order using Paypal, and canceling the previous orders.

It's fairly common practice for card companies to hold funds or reduce available balances without actually charging cards (not necessarily a desirable one for consumers -- but even a local gas station has posted a sign indicating this practice). Another follow-up call to the processor could help, just to make sure that the charges aren't going to be processed at a later date.

I have handled a few international transactions, and have used both PayPal and charge cards without problems.

You may need to talk to your card processing company. They can adjust the threshold for letting international cards through. though the rate that you're charged will of course be variable too.

I've processed through Paypal and our other processor as well, though we sometimes need to 'push' the international cards through form our end. They'd be declined if our customers tried to just use our e-commerce site.

What do you think?
