In an effort to gain customers, many small business owners are wondering whether it makes sense to offer discounts through companies like Groupon or Living Social. Rafi Mohammed, author of "The 1% Windfall," and founder of Culture of Profit, a company that consults with businesses on their pricing, provides some tips on when discounting works for businesses.

    Skip it indeed. Groupon is not a savior for small business. It works for customers who get a "deal." Groupon is using your brand to grow theirs. You ever get flowers delivered to you from a friend? Who do you remember? The friend or the florist? With Groupon, you are the florist and Groupon is the friend.
