Great post, Adam.
In my experience, the key to success is having a holistic, flexible marketing strategy that can move fluidly among different technologies as they change and evolve. Staying in the driver's seat is paramount. The only way to do this is to create a solid marketing plan that has specific goals that can be achieved no matter which technological tools you use most.
Almost all of the social media you mentioned above are owned and controlled by third parties. As great as Twitter and FaceBook are, we need to remember that we cannot rely on them to the exclusion of our own owned and branded online tools. In other words, Twitter (and the rest) are icing, not cake.
If the cake is well baked, it's good even without the icing. The icing just makes it better, and easier and more fun to share with others.
