How do you deal with computer crime?

Do you investigate computer crime internally or hire a consulting firm? We have found that more companies are developing their own computer forensics capabilities and one of the challenges has been identifying what those teams are capable of and when they need help.

Being in the law enforcement field in addition to my new Vertical Backup, LLC venture, I can tell you this. ALWAYS have law enforcement involved from the begining. A "Crime" means that a law enforcement prosecution is dependent upon evidence. Your local law enforcement agency can guide you on the laws specific to your area and what is needed for them to prosecute. Most of the things you may need such as search warrants and subpoenas can only be obtained by them as well.

One more point I forgot to mention, which I think relates more to internal issues, obviously law enforcement would need the "victim's" assistance with information. The assistance they receive should have a good track record, excellent credibility, and can be used as an "expert" when in court. WIthout that, you may have problems with a detailed and in depth case.

What do you think?
