While the U.S. seeks to regain economic momentum during one of the most trying times in its history, it is also essential that we not lose sight of the strong environmental reforms – those already in place and those still to come – that are needed to secure our country’s future stability and assure our standing as a responsible global citizen.

Standard currencies that have fueled both large and small businesses for decades – such as innovative services, state-of-the-art technologies, or life-saving procedures – must make room on the dais for a new, non-negotiable currency, and that currency is environmental sustainability.

We as business leaders and consumers must step forward with urgency and accountability, and insist that business models also begin quantifying the impact that our goods and services levy on environment. When we begin to embrace the necessity of responsible stewardship through this self-grading, we will also begin to see new ways to create efficiencies and replace outmoded processes that drain resources and add cost.

Organizations that thrive over the next decade will be world-class in service, value and environmental leadership. All three. Simultaneously.
